Tasks in class Direct link to this section
Balancing forms Direct link to this section
- you’ll get a piece of black paper and a piece of white paper
- cut the black paper into two rectangles, not leaving scraps
- think about rules that you can use to position the black rectangles on the white paper
- we’ll discuss ideas that you come up with
- taking this to the computer:
- use the rules you invented to balance two rectangles on a white paper in DrawBot
- what is easy to translate? what is difficult?
- what happens when you shift the rules from static to flexible?
Flatterpress Direct link to this section
- you’ll get a sheet of printed letterforms from the letterpress studio downstairs (thanks Mitko!)
- take a little time and study your letters:
- whats the height of ascenders and descenders?
- how wide is it?
- use this template and start drawing your letter shapes in DrawBot
- don’t import the scans as background, just draw by looking
- make use of variables that we will use to draw your letters later
- use bezier paths, head to the resources section for background info
Homework Direct link to this section
- finish a set of letters (at least a–z) and upload your "fonts" to your git service of choice by November 4, 2024

- meet the other, or at least chat, talk, telephone with one another
- speak about the last thing you read, be it a headline in a newspaper, a sentence in a book, a verse of a song
- design a poster using the text and the font of your corresponding other
- bring your poster to the next session in printed form, November 28, 2024
